You can buy some crafting materials from vendors.  So far my number crunching says that sending your crew on missions for these materials is more cost effective.  This list of materials and prices is take from the Imperial Fleet Crafting Vendor in version 6.2a.  There are crafting vendors on other planets/locations. I can’t say for certain one way or the other if they have the same materials at the same price.
